Roz Chast’s Japanese Matchboxes

This is a small sampling of the pictures of Japanese matchbox labels that I’ve culled from the Internet—mostly eBay—in the past several months. They’re all from around 1920-1940, the period between the two World Wars. I have more than a thousand of these images, sorted into categories like bars, billiards, women and wine, buildings, Mickey Mouses, cups, nudes, dancing, barbershops, faces, W.T.F., and much much more.

Read more about Chast’s collection in her Sketchbook in this week’s magazine.
