The Cartoon Lounge: The Ball Is in Our Court

In this week’s Cartoon Lounge, it’s in their court and then it’s in ours, and back and forth and ping and pong. All this frenetic activity took place for a very good cause, at the Big Brothers Big Sisters table-tennis tournament, held at Grand Central Terminal last week.

It was a doubles tournament, and I doubled up with my friend the puzzle-master extraordinaire Will Shortz to be honorary co-chairs of the tournament, and also to participate in it. And participate we did, making it into the semifinals before being eliminated. Undaunted, we have resumed training for next year’s competition. Actually, as you’ll find out in the episode, Will has never stopped, having played well over a thousand days in a row.

If you’d like to play with Will, you probably can, if you visit the Westchester Table Tennis Center, in Pleasantville, New York, which he owns and runs when he’s not stumping us with the fiendishly hard clues in his Saturday puzzles. One hint, if you do play him: watch out for his deadly down-and-across shot.
